ABSTRACT

Objectives@#This study aimed to analyze research trends in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and savant syndrome and their cognitive characteristics through a systematic literature review. The objectives of this study were to establish an overview of research trends in ASD and savant syndrome, analyze the overall characteristics of individuals with ASD and savant syndrome, and examine their cognitive characteristics. @*Methods@#For the systematic literature review, three criteria were used to select review articles: 1) literature from peer-reviewed journals, published in the past 15 years, from 2008 to 2022; 2) subjects with ASD and savant syndrome; 3) study objectives focused on the basic phenomenon and cognitive characteristics of ASD and savant syndrome. Finally, based on the selection criteria, a total of 40 articles were included. @*Results@#Five themes and nine subthemes were derived from the analysis of 40 studies. The five main themes were as follows: 1) What is savant syndrome? 2) Demographic characteristics of savant syndrome; 3) Spectra of savant syndrome; 4) Savant syndrome and ASD;and 5) Cognitive characteristics of ASD with savant syndrome. The subthemes of the cognitive characteristics were weak central coherence, detail-focused cognitive processing, enhanced perceptual functioning, and hyper-systemizing. @*Conclusion@#Several studies have been conducted to understand ASD and savant syndrome; however, no single theory can specify the cognitive characteristics of people with ASD and savant syndrome. Therefore, further systematic and multi-layered research on ASD and savant syndrome are required for more comprehensive results.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the factor influencing the quality of life of married immigrant women in Korea. METHODS: The subjects included 169 married immigrant women from 3 cities. Data collection was conducted by using 33 questionnaires. The SPSS/WIN 18.0 program was also used. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, correlation analysis, stepwise multiple regression were all conducted. RESULTS: The results indicated that the general influencing factors related to the quality of life of married immigrant women are age, education career, nationality, family type, menopause, exercise, salt intake and social support. CONCLUSION: Based on the study results, nursing intervention and social - cultural, economical and social support network, including the consideration of a comprehensive approach, is needed in order to improved the quality of life.

ABSTRACT

Nowadays, the increasing use of antibiotics induces many complications including pseudomembranous colitis. Isolates of toxigenic Clostridium difficile, the most frequent cause of antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis, are almost always highly susceptible to rifampicin. However, resistant isolates exist and have been associated with colitis in humans. We report a case of pseudomem- branous colitis associated with rifampicin administration.

ABSTRACT

The nutrition knowledge and food attitude of obese children were assessed and compared with their normal children counterparts to provide information for nutrition education programs. One hundred forty six obese children and 92 normal children from the fourth to sixth grade in Bucheon and Anyang elementary schools of Kyeong-gi Province were selected for the study. A multiple choice questionnaire, including 12 items of general nutrition knowledge and 13 items of weight control, were used to test the nutrition knowledge of children. The results of this study are as follows : 1) 57.5% of male and 40.9% of female obese children had experience with weight control, but the rate of correct answers on the nutrition knowledge test ranged from 53% to 58%, which does not show any significant difference between the two groups. The rate of correct answers on items conrerning 'general nutrition knowledge' and 'nutrition knowledge for weight control' did not show any significant difference among the two groups. 2) Obese male students showed a higher rate of correct answers(59.2%) on items of 'the proper food selection for obese children', compared with their counterparts and also obese female students showed a higher rate of correct answers(88.6%) on 'physical exercise', compared with their counterparts. 3) The rate of correct answers on nutrition knowledge of 'basic food groups', 'the functions of iron and vitamins', 'the concept of energy', and 'the principle of weight change' were lower than 40%. 4) The obese children frequently did not have breakfast, overate during lunch in many cases, and had low recognition on knowledge that was necessary to weight control. 5) Only 30.9% and 22.7% of male and female obese children replied that they would participate in weight control programs. However, 53.6% of males and 68.2% of females did not show any concern in participating the programs. From these results, it was suggested that it is necessary to motivate the obese to participate in weight-control program. When developing nutrition education programs for the obese, the contents of the questions that showed a low correct answering rates should be emphasized.

ABSTRACT

Coronary arteriovenous fistula is a rare congenital coronary artery anomaly in adults. Most such fistula drain into a right heart chamber or into the pulmonary artery. Congenital left coronary artery-left ventricle fistula is even more uncommon. Aortography and selective coronary angiography are still the diagnostic mode of choice. However, recent studies have demonstrated that two-dimensional echocardiography with or without Doppler color flow imaging is a useful noninvasive tool in the diagnosis of coronary artery fistula. A 29 year-old female who had an exertional dyspnea, chest pain, and continuous diastolic murmur was referred to our hospital for further evaluation. The transthoracic two-dimensional and color Doppler echocardiography revealed a dilated left coronary artery which was drained into left ventricle. The coronary angiography showed that the left circumflex artery was very dilated and tortuous, and contrast medium passed from the left circumflex artery into the left ventricular cavity via a fistula. However, the right coronary artery and the left anterior descending artery were normal. We reported a case of an echocardiographically documented fistula between the left circumflex coronary artery and the left ventricle in young woman.

ABSTRACT

Type II autoimmune polyglandular syndrome typically presents in adulthood. Insulin dependent diabetes mellitus and thyroid dysfunction are the most frequent manifestations. Addison's disease is the third major endocrine component of this disorder. In this report, we described a thirty-two year-old male patient who had hypogonadism, insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, and mild Addison's disease presenting its first manifestation as an acute adrenal crisis due to diabetic ketoacidosis. The ACTH concentration will be elevated early in the course of Addisons disease even before a significant reduction in the basal cortisol level or its response to exogenous ACTH occurs. Therefore, plasma ACTH measurements serve as a valuable screening study for Addisons disease.

ABSTRACT

Improving validity and reliability is the important components of clinical laboratory tests. And the quality control of the test should be started with the accurate collection of specimen. Urinalysis is one of the useful and common tests in diseases diagnosis and determining the process of medical treatment. Since urinalysis is requested routinely in hospital setting, the importance of the quality control for urine specimen is often ignored. To improve the validity of urinalysis, a clinical trial was done on the method of collection urine specimen. The result was as follows : 1. The rate of presumtive UTI(urinary tract infection) was decreased in 21.6% with experiment method for collecting urine specimen. 2. The rate of presumtive UTI in female patients was decreased in 43.2% with the experiment method. 3. The rate of negative urine culture was decreased in 6.6% with the experiment method.
